Artist Statement of James Sutton

James works in stone and bronze from his studio on Hall farm in Gainsborough. He produces work to commission and exhibits throughout the country. At only 27 James is still experimenting with sculpture and ideas but has spent the last six years establishing him self and his studio. His work is often inspired by nature and emotions, both figurative and abstract but often simply an interpretation of "simple beautiful shapes I observe, and try to bring to the awareness of others". He is currently working on a new series looking at childhood toys.

James also runs all kinds of Creative Workshops for the community. For All ages and abilities from care homes too primary schools, and people with special needs and isolated groups in the community.

"The problem of contemporary sculpture and the garden is one which has rankled in my mind for years. It is usually resolved through a process of inversion-that is turning it into sculpture in the garden as against garden sculpture. By that I mean the sculptor takes over the garden as an open exhibition gallery, of which the focus is their creation, to which the world of nature merely provides the frame. The Idea that sculpture is a contributory element to an overall'mise en scene',in which, sometimes its role may be incedental rather than central, has been lost.In this we have seen the betrayall of the great tradition of garden sculpture, one which was unashamed at being decorative or delightful."
